When I load up Freeciv and attempt to click "Start A New Game" or chose a scenario, I always get 4 consecutive messages running on the bottom and Freeciv will do nothing afterwards:

1st Message - You were rejected from the game: The client is missing a capability that this server needs. Server version: 2.4.0-beta2 Client version:2.3.4 Upgrading it may help!

2nd Message - Client capability string: +Freeciv-2.3-network timeout_extended_range eg_report_size rules_finished trademindlist_size

3rd Message - Server capability string: +Freeciv-2.4-network rules_finished trademindist_size actcount_range

4th Message - Lost connection to server (server diconnected)!

I would really appreciate any help, as I enjoyed playing Freeciv.

To elaborate further, I am using Vista 64 bit, and I have a good knowledge of computers but I am not a genius.

Have you two installations of freeciv on that computer? Since you seem to have mismatched server (2.4.0-beta2) and client (2.3.4). Yuo are running 2.3.4 -client that launches local server for itself when you click "Start a New Game". It then connects to that server. The server it connects to is 2.4.0-beta2. It seems that the server client finds (usually from %PATH%) is version 2.4.0-beta2. Another possibility that's actually a bug, but which I have experienced myself, is that you already have 2.4.0-beta2 server running on your computer (maybe leftover from earlier run) when you run the 2.3.4 client and the client finds that server instead of the one it launches itself. At one point I had the Freeciv beta installed, but it started doing a similar thing so I just uninstalled it all together and installed 2.3.4 instead.
Before I read your response I had uninstalled 2.3.4 so I could reinstall it just to see what it would do and it's still giving me the same error messages and won't start a game.
I'm really confused because I still have the Beta uninstalled and deleted the installer for it just to be thorough.
To me, it seems like there is something left over from the Beta somehow to keep confusing the 2.3.4 into connecting to the 2.4.0 server.

There must be working server 2.4.0-beta2 installation on your computer. It's not merely "connecting to the 2.4.0 server" but it's running one.
You could try running freeciv-server separately, preferably from DOS-prompt. Upon launching it says "This is the server for Freeciv version xxx". If you get correct version of freeciv-server to run, you can then "Connect to Network Game" from client to connect game on "localhost". --Cazfi (talk) 08:03, August 19, 2013 (UTC)
Thank you so much! That seems to have fixed it
