I am trying to make a map of a real country (New Zealand) as my kids thought it would be great.

I used a jpg to ascii tool, and recreated the map. I then ediited a saved game and cut and and pasted lines into it like this:

and so on down 128 lines.

But when I load the game, it's not using the map.

Any clues as to how to proced?

The most obvious thing that's missing from those lines is an equals sign -- should be t0000=":::....

If that's not it, what version of Freeciv are you using, and have you set the width and height to match the map you're grafting in?

There are other people on forum.freeciv.org who've grafted maps into savegames in this way -- see for instance this thread and this one.

Yes, that was it, adding the = signs fixed it.
