I got bored with the random generator and its limitations and thought I might try some of the maps (only available through the "Scenarios" section), but found that it isn't possible to play it with my own extensively modified ruleset; instead it automatically sets everything to "Default" regardless of what ruleset I select in the menu.

Upon examining the map files, I discovered that they apparently each have their own preset rules. I guess that means that if I want to play one of these maps with a different ruleset, I'll have to go in and edit the file by hand.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if I've got this right, and each map file does have its own pre-selected, unchangeable ruleset, doesn't that system seem to be a bit of a kludge? I can understand that it's all well and good for players to be forced to follow certain rules if they're playing a scenario (not that any real Civ-2-style scenarios like WWII or Rise of Rome seem to exist right now), but it seems to me that I ought to be able to just load the map from the file, and then select all of the other factors myself -- including randomized starting positions, resources, etc. Right now, though, it doesn't seem like that's possible.

If there is some trick to doing this without editing the files by hand, I would like to know it; otherwise I would recommend a careful review of alternate ways to handle scenario/map files.99.53.201.46 08:04, November 5, 2012 (UTC)
