Unfortunately I as well as some friends lack the time to play Freeciv online. But if the game would operate like the round-based Civ1, it could be possible to save a move, email it to the next player, and so on.
Perhaps a routine could be written that allows the person setting up the game to select a round-based procedure, and to allocate players with their nations and emails. Upon finishing a move, the file might then automatically be emailed to the next player.
It will not completely be possible to prevent cheating, but at least the game could record if someone needs to open his file several times, thus warning other players if someone might cheat.
Unfortunately I lack the computer skills to design such a procedure in the game.. but maybe someone in the forum does? Seine Lordschaft 14:50, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- I support this feature request, but it really should have been filed in the bug tracker. The main forum is more active than this one, and the bug tracker is more active than both but should only be used for development discussion.
- This is actually a prominent feature of CivII as well and actively practiced by its community. They must rely fully on the honor system, but as a programmer I think a simple savegame counter like you describe wouldn't be too hard to add. However, for the same reason (FOSS) that such a feature would be easy to add, it would be easy and legal to remove it (hack your client). If a programmer/hacker is willing to cheat, I don't know what would stop them from doing that (unless they just don't know the language).
- A related request is at Forum:Please add an option to save multiplayer games. --Jesdisciple (talk) 06:32, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
- Wait a sec... The way it's done in CivII is to save a single-player game before ending your turn and send it to the next player. When you receive it, you log in as the correct nation and repeat the process. This provides no savegame counter.
- Also, the savegame counter would get complicated when things like 3+ players, substitute players, and players alternating computers were planned for. --Jesdisciple (talk) 06:38, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
