Freeciv

Hi,

I may be dumb, but I just can't figure out how to create a new map from scratch.

I use Freeciv 2.3.4 for Windows. I have tried to start a new game, went to Edit, enabled Editing Mode, but I only seem to be able to edit the squares that are next to the initial explorer and settlers.

You initially start the game as a player, and when you enter edit mode you get that player's view of the world (i.e. that granted by its units). If you select "Global Observer" from the drop-down to the right of the edit controls you can see the whole world, which is probably what you wanted.

I also see that I can click on the 'eye' icon to then view the whole world, but I can only view it, not modify it.

The "eye" icon adds to the tiles that the player currently knows about, so drawing with it reveals tiles. This probably isn't what you want. (N/A if you change to be the global observer.)

Also the world kinda already exists, what I really wanted to do was to start from a blank canvas and create a brand new world map. Is this possible?

Not that I know of. There's no valid state of "no terrain", so the map has to have some contents. You probably want a global ocean; I can't think of a way to generate one, though. Your best bet is to choose terrain (mountain icon", select ocean, change "size" to a big number, and scribble. Then you'll have to clear up all the specials etc that are left around, which you can do with a similar approach.
This use case isn't currently very well catered for in the editor (unless I've missed something), and in general, documentation is a bit lacking too. -- JTN (talk) 18:56, April 3, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks a lot!

Hi JTN, thanks for taking the time to post your answer. It worked just like you said: select Edit, then switch to Global Observer mode, paint the whole existing map as deep ocean, then draw my map over the top. Brilliant. Thanks very much! (I am doing a map of the world of ASOIAF by the way - 50,000 tiles!)

Thanks again
