Did you know you can play Freeciv in more than thirty different languages? See Interface Language for how to change Freeciv's language.
We rely on volunteers to translate key words and phrases to make other languages available. Could you help with some translations?
Technical details[]
Freeciv uses the gettext system for internationalization and localization support. For more details, see:
- the info file about gettext
- Freeciv's Gettext Guide
the gettext notes
See Localization to know how to add or modify a translation, Internationalization for the technical details of Freeciv translation, and how to create a localized wiki if you want to translate this website into your language.
For returning (and new) translators: read our guide on how to commit to the source tree.
There is a dedicated mailing list for Freeciv translation called freeciv-i18n. Subscribe to post new messages.

Legend:
- First version: the first major release of Freeciv in which this translation appeared, if known.
- Last touched: the last major release of Freeciv in which this translation had significant updates. Intended to identify translations that have been abandoned (see below).
- Committer: the preferred Github account holder to actually commit translation updates to Git. This may be the translator themself, if they have Git access, or a member of the dev team who knows the language in question and so can review the changes.
- If "@gna", this person has not yet transitioned from Gna to Github and we're waiting for them to reclaim their committership.
- If blank, anyone with git access should feel free to commit translation updates posted to freeciv-i18n or the ticket tracker.
A translation is considered "abandoned" if it has not been significantly updated for two major Freeciv versions. So, in the 3.0 cycle, those translations with 2.5, 2.4, 2.3, 2.2, 2.1, 2.0, or 1.14 in the "Last touched" column are considered abandoned. In this case, the contact information may be out of date, but is left in place in case it's helpful.
Nightly generated translation statistics for each branch are available from https://files.freeciv.org/nightly/ .
If you want to take over or update a translation that's been worked on recently, you should make an effort to contact the current/last maintainer first, to avoid duplication of work; but updates to abandoned translations will be accepted without evidence of such an attempt.
(Translations with no version information are ones where an intent to translate has been declared but no localisation has yet been committed to Git.)
